David Mehlman

David Mehlman founded Shadowbox Films with Justin Schein in 1998, and most recently collaborated with Justin as co-director and editor of the acclaimed feature-documentary, Left On Purpose (2016).

 

He is an award-winning filmmaker and editor whose documentaries have shown internationally in theaters, on networks including HBO/Cinemax, PBS, AMC, ABC, at film festivals including Sundance and SXSW. He has edited two Oscar-winning films: The Moon and the Son (Best Animated Short, 2005), which he also sound designed, and was supervising editor of Freeheld (Best Documentary Short, 2007). David was one of the editors of Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's Oscar and Emmy-nominated documentary feature, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (2011).

 

Other recent editing credits include the Ron Howard and Brian Grazer-produced, MARS, National Geographic's epic series that combines scripted narrative about a 2033 manned Mars mission with documentary storytelling about current scientific and technological efforts to make such a mission possible, as well as Dan Taberski's SXSW Jury Prize-winning short doc, These C*cksucking Tears about the first openly gay country singer, and Morgan Spurlock Inside Man for CNN.

 

David has a master's degree in Documentary Film and Video from Stanford University.
